Jury selection for the 24th Judicial District Court is managed by the Jury Commission, a five-member body made up of the Clerk of Court and four citizens appointed by the district court. When you receive a jury summons – you MUST respond within five days to confirm your intent to serve and update your contact information.
A Note about Juror Fraud: Someone posing as a court official, such as a “jury coordinator,” may call and claim that a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you failed to appear for jury duty. The caller may then ask for your Social Security number, date of birth, or credit card number to “cancel the warrant.” Do not provide this information — it is a scam designed to steal your identity.
The Clerk of Court’s Office will NEVER ask for personal information over the telephone. Do NOT give out personal information over the phone.
The Stand-By System
Jefferson Parish uses a stand-by system to manage jury attendance. Prospective jurors are randomly selected and assigned a stand-by number. The evening before your service date — after 5:00 p.m. — you can check whether you are needed by calling (504) 364-3838 or visiting the Verify Necessity to Appear page above. Juror lists are randomized to ensure fair representation across all summons recipients.
The stand-by system reduces unnecessary trips to the courthouse. Because cases are often settled or continued before trial, the Clerk can adjust pool sizes based on actual court activity — saving jurors, litigants, and taxpayers time and money.
During online confirmation of your jury service, you may indicate an exemption or a disqualification if any apply — see pages 5 and 9 of the Juror Handbook for details. If you have a hardship that requires an excusal, you may contact the Jury Commission directly; documentation will be required. See page 10 of the Juror Handbook.
About the Jury Commission
The jury commission consists of (a) the Clerk of Court or a deputy clerk designated by him/her in writing to perform all actions affecting the jury commission and (b) four other members having the requisite qualifications and appointed by order of the district court to serve at the court’s pleasure.
Meetings of the jury commission may be held only when a quorum of at least three members is present. The meetings are scheduled during the morning hours on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week and ending upon completion of each day’s work. No meetings are conducted on legal holidays.
Jury commission meetings take place in the Jury Assembly Room in the Jefferson Parish General Government Building, 200 Derbigny St., Gretna, LA 70053, where jurors report for jury duty. The meetings are open to the public, and any prospective juror or member of the public may have access to any meeting upon notice/request directed to staff in the Jury Assembly Room.
