Jon A. Gegenheimer, Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court

Clerk of Court

Jon A. Gegenheimer

First elected November 21, 1987 — serving Jefferson Parish for over three decades.

  • B.A. Psychology, Loyola University
  • J.D., Loyola University School of Law (Loyola Law Review)
  • LL.M. in Admiralty, Tulane University School of Law

Jon A. Gegenheimer was first elected as Clerk of Court of Jefferson Parish on November 21, 1987. Mr. Gegenheimer had been a full-time practicing attorney since 1971, gaining extensive experience in civil and criminal law at both state and federal levels. He served as staff attorney for the Louisiana Department of Health and Human Resources from 1981 to 1987 and as City Attorney for the City of Gretna from 1982 to 1988. He also taught commercial law at Our Lady of Holy Cross College from 1979 to 1987.

Mr. Gegenheimer was re-elected in 1991, receiving 80% of the vote, and has been returned to the Clerk of Court’s position in every subsequent election.

He has received nationwide recognition from attorneys, judges, and court administrators for his distinguished record of innovation in court administration, elections administration, and land records management. When he assumed office in 1988, he inherited a disorganized and financially troubled office. Mr. Gegenheimer acted quickly to transform it into an efficient operation dedicated first and foremost to public service.

He remains focused on adapting the court, elections, jury, and land records systems of Jefferson Parish to the information age — maintaining and enhancing electronic imaging and retrieval, electronic transfer and filing of real estate documents, electronic court filing, and Internet access to all public records under the Clerk of Court’s custody and control.
