Following a 2010 computer failure at the Orleans Parish Clerk of Court’s office that resulted in the loss of 180,000 digital records — severely disrupting real estate transactions and commerce across the region — Clerk of Court Jon A. Gegenheimer issued the following assurance to Jefferson Parish residents and legal professionals.
Such a catastrophe cannot occur in Jefferson Parish. Our system includes multiple layers of back-up at multiple safe and secure locations, comprising three protective components: electronic images with differential and full backups on multiple servers; magnetic tapes containing identical data; and microfilm records generated from electronic images.
During Hurricane Katrina, the system’s resilience was proven. Our computer system remained operational throughout the storm, with generators maintaining power and remote access enabling public record retrieval from anywhere globally. Should any computer malfunction occur, multiple server backups activate automatically without interruption.
The public record of Jefferson Parish is safe.
